Alpha waves are harmless as they can not pass through paper while beta
waves are stronger & can pass only through clothes so wear heavy clothing.
Positron waves are stronger then beta & may require & inch of cement &
lead. Gamma waves are pure energy unlike the other 4 & its wavelength is
small & dangerous & u need like 8 or so inches of lead & concrete to be
protected. Radioactive materials are usually handled by people with lead suits or with simple robotic machines but as you can see some of them can be touched & harmless.

This method may be applied to gaseous material also. The radiation-absorbent material consists of heavy metal compounds, preferably barite powder or sludge.
